The beginning
Launched in 2024, Musk Pour Amber joins Khadlaj's Oud Pour Series, a collection built around the house's signature Arabic perfumery traditions, where musk, rose, and oriental resins take center stage. The fragrance takes its direction from amber's oldest role in Gulf perfumery: not a color or a stone, but a sensation. Warmth that clings to skin and refuses to leave. Musk Pour Amber extends that heritage by pulling sweetness from hazelnut and vanilla rather than dense resin. It's an invitation to wear amber without the intensity of heavier oud-based formulations. The result reads as a softer interpretation of a tradition that often demands commitment, an amber scent for someone who wants the warmth without the smoke.
What's distinctive here is the placement of hazelnut in the heart alongside rose and jasmine sambac. Most amber compositions lean on benzoin, labdanum, or tolu balsam for their creamy warmth. Substituting hazelnut, a gourmand note rarely found in traditional Middle Eastern perfumery, gives the composition a toasted, almost pastry-like quality that bridges French gourmand tradition and Arabic amber sensuality. The frankincense in the opening is equally deliberate. It provides the resinous lift that agarwood usually contributes in Gulf perfumery, but lighter, more transparent.
The evolution
On skin, Musk Pour Amber moves through three distinct phases over 8 to 10 hours. The first 30 minutes are the coldest: bergamot cuts sharp, pear adds a crisp fruit sweetness, and frankincense drifts through like smoke from a nearby room. It reads almost green at this stage, which surprises people expecting immediate amber warmth. By the one-hour mark, the hazelnut arrives fully. This is where the fragrance finds its center, toasted, creamy, with rose threading through like silk caught in amber light. Jasmine sambac adds a faint indolic sweetness, but it stays restrained. The composition feels like a dessert course that hasn't been served yet, all promise and no sugar shock. The drydown, beginning around hour four, is where vanilla and cedarwood take over. The vanilla here is warm but not vanillic, closer to the inside of a vanilla pod than a bakery.
