Why it exists.
The beginning
Kajal Perfumes Paris began with two creatives who grew up surrounded by the perfume rituals of their families' homes, approaching fragrance as something intimate and deeply personal. Ruby takes its name from the gem itself, inspired by ancient cultures that believed rubies held an eternal flame at their core. For Kajal, this translated into a fragrance that opens with a vivid, jewel-bright burst of cherry and red berries, meant to capture that sense of inner warmth and passion. The perfumer, Ayse Sirkecioglu, built Ruby around this idea of a contained flame, translating it into a scent that is warm from the very first spray.
The note choices reflect a deliberate philosophy: fruit opens the story boldly, the heart softens it into something edible and inviting, and the base grounds it in warmth. Each layer serves a purpose in the narrative arc. Coconut and almond prevent the opening from feeling too sweet, ice cream keeps the heart from becoming heavy, and benzoin adds a resinous depth that extends wear time without overwhelming. The result is a fragrance built on contrast: bright fruit against creamy sweetness against warm resin.
The evolution
Ruby opens with cherry and red berries as the dominant players, immediately bright and juicy. Pineapple joins quickly, adding tropical lift, while coconut and almond round the edges into something softer and more interesting. This fruity opening is the most extroverted phase of the fragrance. Within fifteen minutes, the whipped cream and brown sugar emerge, tempering the fruitiness into something edible and warm. Ice cream deepens the heart further, giving the mid-section a nostalgic quality that feels like comfort in a bottle. The drydown of vanilla, musk, tonka bean, amber, and benzoin arrives slowly, wrapping the skin in warmth that stays close for hours.
Cultural impact
Ruby marks a shift in direction for Kajal. Where the house has built much of its identity on compositions with notable depth and complexity, Ruby leans entirely into sweetness and warmth, a choice that stands out within the brand's broader catalog. The fragrance occupies familiar territory within the sweet-fruity-gourmand space, and Ruby doesn't claim to be revolutionary in concept. What it does offer is execution that justifies attention, with a composition that avoids feeling forced or artificial in its sweetness.
