Why it exists.
The beginning
Anne Flipo and Delphine Lebeau-Krowiakj created Aqua Lemon Cologne in 2022 as part of Jo Malone's summer seasonal collection. The name says everything: aqua for the water, lemon for the brightness. Inspired by British lidos, those outdoor pools where everyone crowds in when the sun finally decides to show up. It's a fragrance about that specific British summer moment: the anticipation before the first dive, the bright citrus and cool aquatic notes rising from sun-warmed skin still damp from the water. The brief was simple and executed cleanly: cold water, bright citrus, nothing complicated. What arrived was exactly that, uncomplicated, refreshing, and unmistakably itself.
The structure is where it gets interesting. Lemon petitgrain and mint sitting side by side in the heart, that's not a typical pairing. Lemon petitgrain is the bitter, slightly floral leaf of the lemon tree, more herbal than the fruit, more complex than the essential oil. Mint adds actual coolness, not metaphorical freshness, but actual mentholated sensation on skin. The mint isn't decoration. It changes the temperature of the fragrance. Mandarin in the top gives you the sweet, bright opening, the lemon petitgrain the bitter counterpoint, and the mint is what makes you stop and reconsider.
The evolution
The mandarin arrives first, bright, sharp, immediate. It's the cold-water shock, that first second of contact. Thirty minutes in, the lemon petitgrain asserts itself, bitter and herbal, while the mint begins its slow cool-down of the composition. This is where it gets interesting. Mint doesn't usually sit this prominently in a citrus fragrance, it's often a whisper in the top, gone before you notice. Here, it's the main event. The coolness lingers through the heart, a refreshing presence that extends the initial burst. The cedar doesn't arrive dramatically. It emerges quietly, warm and woody, replacing the mint's cool with dry wood. As it develops, the composition settles into a balance of cedar and skin, intimate, close, present. The mint never fully disappears. It's still there, underneath, for anyone who gets close enough.

Released in 2022 as a seasonal summer scent, Aqua Lemon sits comfortably in Jo Malone's wheelhouse, fresh, approachable, wearable. It manages to be clean without veering into clinical territory, bright without becoming aggressive. It's the kind of fragrance people reach for when they want to smell good without thinking too hard about it.
