The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
With Love From Positano began with a family holiday along the Amalfi coast. Jo Malone CBE found herself captivated by Positano, the drive through its winding clifftop roads, afternoons spent in Mediterranean sunshine, evenings wandering Italian piazzas for a pre-dinner spritz served on embroidered napkins. The fragrance translates that specific kind of happiness: the warmth of somewhere new, the ease of being on holiday, the moment when the light goes golden and everything feels possible. It is love letter geography, captured in scent.
What makes this composition unusual is the pairing of bright citrus with star anise, two notes that don't typically share space. Bergamot and orange oil arrive like coastal sunshine, immediate and zesty. Star anise doesn't compete with them; it deepens them, adds a quiet complexity that rewards patience. The result is a fragrance that smells like the Amalfi coast without resorting to the usual fig or marine notes. It smells like the spritz, not the beach. There's a difference, and that difference is everything.
The evolution
The opening hits like morning sun through a hotel window, bergamot and orange oil arriving together, bright and unapologetic. This is pure Italian citrus, the kind that makes you want to order another coffee. The star anise begins to surface, creeping in quietly rather than announcing itself. The citrus softens as the anise settles, and what remains is something warmer and more contemplative. The drydown is intimate, close to the skin, powdery in the best sense, the memory of a day at the coast rather than the day itself. There is a natural arc to this fragrance that invites you to notice how the top notes give way to something richer and more layered, how the brightness gradually transforms into a softer, more atmospheric presence that lingers without ever becoming heavy or cloying.
Cultural impact
This fragrance offers something that resists the safe, inoffensive approach to citrus. The star anise gives it an edge, something to notice, something that stands apart from the expected. There is an unexpected depth here that sparks conversation, an unconventional choice that creates a distinctive signature. The combination of bright Italian citrus with the spice of star anise produces a fragrance that is anything but predictable, appealing to those who appreciate complexity and are willing to explore beyond conventional choices.
