The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Ebony & Cassis arrived in 2023, inspired by a single image from Malone's imagination, a river dhow cruise in Oman. Not a memory of being there, but a dream of it. The scent of wood, rich silks, and the sweetness of promise. She translated that feeling into a composition where blackcurrant's tartness gives way to warm woods and spice, creating a fragrance that feels both grounded and far away. The bright, sharp opening of blackcurrant gradually gives way to something deeper and more contemplative as the fragrance develops on the skin. It's a scent that invites lingering, that occupies the space between lightness and shadow, between what is familiar and what remains just out of reach.
The heart of this composition lives in an unexpected pairing: blackcurrant and dates. Blackcurrant bud absolute brings a tart, almost wine-like quality, bright and sharp in the opening, but it transforms. As the fragrance settles, the dates emerge with their sticky, concentrated sweetness, tempering the berry's sharpness and adding a warmth that feels almost honeyed. Cedarwood carries the composition through this transition, its dry woody character grounding what could have tipped into sweetness. The result is a fruity-spicy-woody structure that feels neither purely Mediterranean nor purely Middle Eastern, something that bridges both worlds through scent alone.
The evolution
The opening announces itself quickly, tart, bright blackcurrant bud absolute alongside blackberry. For the first portion of wear you're in fruit territory, the berries sharp and vivid. Then the handoff happens. Dates arrive with a sticky sweetness that doesn't apologize for itself, bridging the gap between the initial tartness and the woods waiting beneath. Cedarwood emerges as the composition evolves, its dry character pulling the sweetness toward something more restrained. As the fragrance develops further, myrrh joins in, bringing warmth without heaviness, the resinous quality that makes skin smell like it was touched by something ancient. Patchouli lingers quietly underneath. The cedar carries the dates toward something darker. Patchouli and myrrh anchor the drydown, earthy, resinous, quiet.
Cultural impact
Ebony & Cassis occupies a distinctive space in the Jo Loves catalog, fruity in structure but warm and woody in feeling. The combination of blackcurrant, dates, and cedarwood creates something unexpected, a fragrance for someone who wants fruit but has outgrown simple sweetness. Someone drawn to warmth that doesn't announce itself. The Oman inspiration gives it a dreamlike quality, something softer and silkier than expected. The fragrance evolves on the skin, moving from bright tartness to deep, resinous warmth, creating a scent experience that feels both intimate and mysterious.
