The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Frank Voelkl created One in 2021 with a clear brief: restraint. The name itself, One, suggests distillation, a single idea stripped of excess. The J.Lo brand built over two decades has ranged from the bright citrus of L.A. Glow to the warm vanilla of Still, but this composition pulls in a quieter direction. Voelkl reached for woody-leathery character with powdery florals at the center, building a fragrance that reads as considered rather than commercial. The suede and sandalwood base anchors everything that came before it, pulling the composition inward rather than projecting outward.
What makes the structure interesting is the tension between the soft opening and the dry, warm base. Pink pepper and freesia give the top a delicate, almost translucent quality, fleeting, powdery, soft. The heart of Clearwood and cedar shifts the register toward something more grounded, while jasmine absolute bridges the gap between floral delicacy and woody warmth. Then suede takes over, and the character completely changes. The soft, warm nap of leather against skin becomes the dominant memory, intimate, close, worn rather than applied.
The evolution
The opening announces freesia and peach blossom first, delicate, slightly citrusy, fresh on skin and clothing alike. Pink pepper threads through as a whisper of spice, lifting without sharpening. For the first thirty minutes or so, this reads as a quiet floral with a soft edge. The transition to the heart happens gradually, almost imperceptibly. The florals thin. The wood emerges, clearwood first, then cedar asserting itself with a warm, dry presence. Jasmine arrives quietly, bridging the gap between the soft opening and what comes next. The base is where One earns its name. Sandalwood and suede settle close, creating a skin-warm effect, like the soft nap of expensive leather that's been worn in. Oakmoss adds a quiet mossy depth that keeps the drydown from reading as purely clean. What lingers at hour four is suede, warmth, and the faintest memory of flowers. On clothing, it lasts into the next day as a soft, warm trace.
Cultural impact
One by Jennifer Lopez occupies a specific corner of the celebrity fragrance market, positioned as the quiet, confident option rather than the performative one. Released in 2021 when many celebrity lines were chasing bold projection and social-media moments, this composition took a different angle. The woody-leathery character and moderate sillage appeal to wearers who want something considered rather than commercial, positioning the fragrance as an entry point for those curious about the category without requiring a commitment to heavy projection.
