The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Classique Robe Velours arrived in 1998 as a limited edition collector's bottle, a special iteration of JPGaultier's iconic Classique, dressed for the occasion in a black velvet gown. The original Classique launched in 1993, a voluptuous floral amber that became one of the most recognizable women's fragrances ever made. This edition kept the same warm, powdery soul but gave it a new silhouette: a collector's piece, dressed to impress, with the corseted torso bottle now adorned in a velvet dress inspired by old Hollywood glamour. It wasn't a reinvention, it was a celebration. A way for the house to mark something worth marking without changing what already worked.
What makes this composition interesting is the opening. Star anise is unusual territory for a fragrance that settles into vanilla and powder, it's sharp, almost medicinal, a little strange. But the orange blossom doesn't let it stay strange for long. The two notes pull in opposite directions, and that tension is exactly where the fragrance lives. Add in the Mandarin Orange and Pear at the top, and you have a citrusy-fruity brightness that keeps the anise from going too dark. By the time the orchid and plum arrive in the heart, the strangeness has softened into something warm and familiar. It's a composition that earns its sweetness by starting slightly off-beat.
The evolution
The opening hits with a sharp, cool brightness, the star anise and mandarin orange arrive together, the citrus cutting through the anise's edge. It lasts about twenty minutes before the orange blossom takes over, sweetening everything and pushing the composition toward the warmer middle. The heart phase is where this lives longest: orchid and plum give it body, ylang-ylang adds a creamy floral layer, and the ginger keeps things from going fully soft. There's a spice there, just enough to keep it interesting. Then the drydown. The vanilla arrives quietly, blending with the musk and amber into something powdery and close. It stays intimate, not projecting far, but refusing to disappear. The next morning, there's a faint warmth left on the wrist. Nothing loud. Just the amber, still doing its job.
Cultural impact
Classique Robe Velours sits in the Oriental Floral category, a warm, powdery, vanilla-forward composition that appeals to anyone who loves the comfort of classic women's fragrances. It hasn't achieved the legendary status of the original Classique, but the collector's bottle and the old Hollywood velvet-dress design give it a dedicated following among enthusiasts who appreciate both the scent and the presentation. It's JPGaultier doing what JPGaultier does best: sensuality with a wink.
