The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Jealous released Unity in 2019, a composition from the Abu Dhabi-based house during a period of growing attention for its catalog of emotionally driven scents. The house had built its early identity around fragrances that pulled from regional warmth, leaning into ingredients and accords rooted in landscape and atmosphere. Unity arrived as part of that lineup, a unisex floral-fruity built around a citrus-and-mint opening, a generously textured heart of black currant, violet, rose, woody notes, and neroli, and a base anchored by vanilla. Lemon and bergamot lift the first minutes with a clean, zesty brightness, the mint threading through like a cool draft across the arrangement.
What makes Unity interesting is the restraint of its construction. A short opening sequence, a heart dense enough to carry weight without noise, and a base that doesn't try to outstay its welcome, nothing stacked for spectacle. The violet and rose do much of the talking in the middle, with black currant adding a slightly tart, jammy current that keeps the florals from drifting into prettiness. Neroli steps in almost like an accent verb, sharpening the edges that the currant might otherwise soften. The woody notes run underneath, behaving like soft architecture rather than statement beams.
The evolution
The first ten minutes feel almost monastic. Lemon and bergamot come through clean and bright, sharpened by the cool snap of mint, no sweetness yet, just citrus bite with a green edge. Then the heart arrives and changes the temperature. The whole composition shifts from bright to softly shaded, black currant lending a dim, slightly stewed-fruit note beneath the florals. Rose surfaces briefly, but violet does something specific: it gives the heart a lilac-edged dimness, less candied than rose-fruity, more like crushed petals left in a dish. Neroli weaves through with a faint bitter-orange peel, keeping the florals from settling into anything too sweet. By the two-hour mark, the mint is gone. By four, the violet is fading and the citrus has dissolved entirely.
Cultural impact
Unity sits within Jealous's broader catalog, a quiet member of a collection that ranges from atmospheric florals to smoky resins and textured woods. The brand's positioning, drawing on themes of union, landscape, air, and sea, informs pieces like this one: restrained, emotionally textured, meant to be recognized rather than announced. Where many regional launches lean on heavy oud statements or sweet gourmand territory, Unity takes a different route, building around violet, rose, and neroli in a way that feels more floral bouquet than floral bomb.
