Why it exists.
The beginning
L'Eau d'Issey Pure arrived in 2017 as a continuation of Issey Miyake's water-first philosophy. The original L'Eau d'Issey, launched in 1992, had built the house's identity around purity and stillness. Dominique Ropion took the brief and composed a fragrance that moves between aquatic freshness and floral softness. Mandarin orange brings a bright opening, while lily of the valley, neroli, and rose create a clean, luminous center. Cashmeran and ambergris add a warm, gentle base, giving the composition depth without obscuring its airy character. The result is a study in contrast: cool citrus and petals above, warmer materials below, with each phase remaining connected to the next.
The composition is built from a focused selection of materials. Mandarin orange opens with a crisp, juicy brightness, then leads into a floral heart of lily of the valley, neroli, and rose. The lily of the valley gives the center a green, watery freshness; neroli adds a lightly bitter citrus edge; and rose brings a soft, rounded floral quality beneath them. As the fragrance settles, cashmeran and ambergris create a creamy, warm base.
The evolution
The first ten minutes belong to mandarin orange, bright and almost sharp, with neroli beginning to thread through and soften the edges. The citrus feels juicy and immediate, giving the opening a clean, lifted quality. By the thirty-minute mark, the citrus has settled and the florals take over: lily of the valley dominates, wet and green, with rose arriving underneath. Neroli remains close by, adding a slight bitter brightness to the floral heart. The composition feels like walking through a garden after rain. Around the two-hour mark, the cashmeran begins to surface. It doesn't announce itself; it makes the whole thing feel warmer, closer, like the scent has been absorbed into a favourite piece of clothing. The ambergris adds a soft, rounded depth beneath the flowers, while the citrus and green facets slowly recede.
Cultural impact
L'Eau d'Issey Pure, released in 2017, carries the visual language of the original L'Eau d'Issey into a more floral register. Its opening of mandarin orange feels bright and clean, followed by the green clarity of lily of the valley and the layered softness of neroli and rose. Cashmeran and ambergris bring a warmer, creamier dimension beneath the flowers, creating a composition that feels both fresh and close.
