The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Mystique arrived in 2025 as part of I/ME's collection, a unisex oriental floral built on careful note development. The fragrance combines bright citrus opening with deeper floral and fig elements, creating a composition that moves between freshness and warmth. The note selection draws from oriental florals with a moderate sillage, allowing the scent to develop close to the skin rather than announce itself across a room. This is a fragrance that rewards proximity, inviting someone standing nearby to discover its layers rather than projecting itself into a space. The balance between citrus brightness and floral creaminess creates an interesting tension that holds attention once noticed.
What makes Mystique interesting is how its sweetness stays honest. Red fruits and orange give the opening a jammy brightness, but black pepper and anise interrupt before it becomes dessert. The florals, jasmine and ylang-ylang, don't arrive as a transition. They arrive as a second layer that runs parallel to the opening, so the fragrance never fully leaves citrus before the blooms arrive. Fig bridges both: green enough to feel fresh, sweet enough to connect to the base.
The evolution
The first spray is all brightness and intention. Bergamot hits first, sharp enough to cut through the orange and red fruits, a quick citrus spark that establishes the top layer and then refuses to fully disappear. Jasmine begins threading through the opening, and ylang-ylang arrives with a creamy fullness that softens the pepper's bite. The red fruits do not vanish. They linger underneath, a sweet base that keeps the florals from feeling austere. The fig becomes more apparent as the initial spark settles, not as a standalone note but as a green-creamy presence that adds weight to what might otherwise read as a standard white floral. The citrus spark slowly fades, replaced by vanilla and honey arriving together, powdery and warm. Cedarwood appears late, adding a dry woodiness that prevents the base from becoming syrupy.
Cultural impact
Mystique arrives at a moment when fragrance culture has fractured into competing narratives. Some brands draw on historical legacy and familiar associations, while others emphasize intellectual approach and artistic vision. Still others treat scent as a tool for personal exploration and self-knowledge. I/ME approaches fragrance as research, developing each scent to explore specific emotional and sensory territories. The brand treats each fragrance as something designed to be experienced and interpreted by the wearer, creating compositions that invite engagement rather than simply communicating a predetermined message.
