The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Askew emerged from Humiecki & Graef's 2008 design-driven laboratory, where Sebastian Fischenich and Tobias Muksch treated scent as a problem to solve. In 2009 they tasked Christophe Laudamiel with translating the concept of fury into aroma, pairing a crisp trio of grapefruit, ginger and Guatemalan cardamom with leather as the emotional core and vetiver to ground the composition in something earthier and more grounded than typical citrus-led fragrances.
The choice of leather as the dominant note reflects the brand's refusal to treat fury as something delicate. Grapefruit and ginger open the fragrance with an almost confrontational sharpness, but they exist to frame the leather rather than compete with it. Vetiver grounds the composition in earthiness while birch adds a smoky dimension that prevents the leather from becoming purely animal. Mimosa, the most unexpected note in the lineup, provides a brief moment of softness that makes the subsequent leather dominance feel like a deliberate statement rather than an accident.
The evolution
Askew begins with grapefruit cutting sharply through the air, immediately joined by ginger's warm bite. Within minutes leather arrives with unmistakable authority, softened by birch and stabilized by vetiver. Cardamom lingers alongside the citrus, adding a spiced counterpoint that keeps the opening from feeling straightforward. As the heart develops mimosa appears, a quiet floral presence that adds softness to an otherwise angular composition. The drydown abandons brightness entirely, settling into a deep leathery-woody register where vetiver and birch remain for hours, with only the faintest trace of citrus surviving the transition.
Cultural impact
Askew quickly became a reference point for scent‑driven narratives of anger, earning a reputation among collectors for its unapologetic fury. Its smoky‑leather core is often compared to niche staples like Black Pepper and Copper, positioning it as a bold alternative in the male leather segment. Wearers cite its ability to project confidence in urban evenings, making it a cult favourite for those who enjoy a scent that feels engineered yet visceral.
