The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Prolixe arrived in 2017 from Julien Rasquinet, a perfumer working within Histoires de Parfums' En Aparté collection. The name itself, derived from the Latin for 'prolixity' or extended discourse, says everything about its intent: a fragrance that takes its time, that refuses to arrive all at once. Rasquinet delivered something that behaves differently across its wear, bold at the opening, intimate at the close, never quite what you expected from one moment to the next. The opening arrives with a warm rush of spice that feels confident and present, inviting you in before the composition begins its slow reveal. As it settles, the heart opens to reveal smoke and floral sweetness woven together, reshaping that initial intensity into something softer and more complex.
What makes Prolixe work is its structural tension. The top, cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, reads as warm, almost aggressive in its aromatic punch. But frankincense and rose arrive in the heart to reshape that energy, pulling the composition toward smoke and floral sweetness rather than spice alone. Then the base: patchouli's earthiness, tobacco's warmth, oud's darkness. The effect is a scent that begins as a declaration and resolves as a secret. Each layer seems to contradict the one before it, yet they cohere. That's the trick.
The evolution
The opening announces itself with cardamom and ginger, a sharp, almost bracing warmth that fills space without apology. Within minutes, the rose appears, darker than expected, threaded through with frankincense smoke rather than standing alone as a floral. The handoff from spice to smoke happens quietly, almost seamlessly. Then the base takes over: patchouli first, grounding everything with its signature earth, before tobacco and oud emerge to build that characteristic oriental warmth. The oud lingers longest, resinous, slightly animalic, present on skin into the next day if applied heavily. On fabric, it stays. On skin, it becomes intimate. The sillage starts strong and gradually retreats to a whisper that only the wearer notices. That evolution from room-filling to skin-close is where Prolixe earns its reputation.
Cultural impact
Warm, resinous orientals have long held a place in niche perfumery for those who want something with real presence. Prolixe fits into this tradition with its cardamom-oud-tobacco backbone, a combination that offers depth and complexity rather than immediate accessibility. The fragrance rewards attention, revealing different facets as it develops on the skin. For those who appreciate orientals with genuine character, it stands out from more straightforward options. The composition speaks to anyone who wants a fragrance that demands engagement rather than simply pleasing on first encounter.
