The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Pi Leather Jacket arrived in 2006 as a limited edition collector's bottle, a special iteration of Givenchy's original Pi fragrance. The bottle itself was redesigned by Serge Mansau. At its core, the fragrance opens with crisp conifer notes that carry a sharp, almost bracing quality. As it settles, benzoin introduces a warm, balsamic sweetness that rounds out the evergreen brightness. Guaiac wood threads through the dry-down, adding a subtle smoky character that gives the scent depth and staying power. The overall effect is of a fragrance that begins like stepping into winter air and gradually settles into something warmer, more intimate. There's an edge to how the conifer and oriental elements interact, creating a tension that keeps the composition from becoming predictable.
What makes the composition unusual is the pairing of conifer with benzoin. Givenchy's formulation anchors conifer notes with benzoin's warm, balsamic sweetness and guaiac wood's dry, slightly smoky finish. The result is a fragrance that opens like a winter walk and ends like a fireplace. Rosemary is the bridge between those two worlds: herbaceous, clean, slightly bitter. It keeps the warmth from becoming saccharine and gives the conifer something to argue with.
The evolution
The first five minutes are all mandarin and pine, bright, cold, almost astringent. The mandarin fades fast, leaving the rosemary and pine needles in a partnership that reads as green and resinous rather than sweet. Around the thirty-minute mark, the benzoin begins to surface, pressing against the conifer like something warm pushing into cold air. The hand-off takes another twenty minutes. By hour two, the pine has receded but hasn't disappeared, it lingers at the edges of the drydown while benzoin and guaiac wood take over the center. The final phase is warm, dry, slightly smoky. Guaiac wood has a characteristic that borders on medicinal in some formulations, but here it reads as clean and resinous, closer to sandalwood than tar. On fabric, it can last into the next morning. On skin, expect five to six hours with moderate sillage, present without overwhelming.
Cultural impact
Pi Leather Jacket was released in 2006 as a limited edition. Its combination of conifer and oriental warmth creates a distinctive character within the Pi lineup. The composition opens with sharp evergreen notes that feel crisp and immediate, then evolves as the benzoin's sweetness and guaiac wood's smoky dry-down emerge. The collector's bottle reflects the scent's unique approach. The fragrance has found appreciation among those who seek something that bridges different olfactory families, bringing conifer brightness together with oriental warmth in a way that feels cohesive rather than contradictory.
