The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
In 2015, Givenchy collaborated with Alicia Keys on a limited edition fragrance with purpose: a portion of proceeds supported Keep a Child Alive, the charity Keys co-founded to fight AIDS. The Black Ball edition, a collector's flacon bearing Keys' signature and a golden ribbon, wasn't just a charitable gesture. It was a statement. Givenchy brought its couture sensibility to a partnership with one of music's most distinct voices, creating something that looked beautiful on a shelf and meant something beyond it.
What makes this composition work is the mirabelle. Not bergamot, not lemon, a plum variety that carries a honeyed tartness, sweet without softness. Paired with white florals and jasmine, the mirabelle lifts the composition into something almost edible. The 'divine' in the name isn't marketing hyperbole. The sweet-floral intensity genuinely earns it.
The evolution
The opening arrives bright, mirabelle's fruity sweetness hitting first, that golden quality, tart and inviting. Within minutes, jasmine and white florals take over. The creaminess builds. The plum doesn't disappear, it sweetens everything around it, creating a honeyed effect. By the heart, you're in full white floral territory: rich, heady, the jasmine doing the heavy lifting. Then the base arrives. Patchouli's warm spice, sandalwood's cream, vetiver's earthy smoke. The florals soften but don't vanish. They linger underneath the wood. The drydown stays close to skin, intimate, woody, warm, moderate sillage that asks for proximity. Four to six hours on most skin types. Close enough to be noticed, not loud enough to announce itself.
Cultural impact
Dahlia Divin Black Ball Limited Edition captures Givenchy's theatrical vision of feminine power and luxury. The golden goddess aesthetic that defines the entire Dahlia Divin range reaches its most elaborate expression here, with the black ball motif symbolizing celebration and opulence. This limited edition positions itself as a collector's piece, appealing to fragrance enthusiasts who treat their scent wardrobe as an expression of personal artistry and status. The Mirabelle plum note provides an unexpected depth, that sun-ripened fruit quality bringing warmth to what could otherwise feel purely decorative.
