The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Montana arrived in 2022, settling into Gissah's catalogue as a woody balsamic composition that treats oud as a textural element rather than a headline. Bergamot lifts the opening alongside a juicy berry brightness, cut by the dry snap of pimento black pepper, so the first impression feels lifted and polished before anything resinous appears. The heart relies on akigalawood and cashmeran for a woody, slightly metallic warmth that pulls the scent inward, letting the oud weave through the fabric instead of sitting on top of it. Labdanum and sandalwood anchor the base with a creamy, resinous gravity, while incense adds a quiet, smoky thread that stays close to the skin.
What gives Montana its character is the interplay between Akigalawood and natural oud in the heart, a pairing that adds a peppery, woody transparency to what could otherwise read as a dense, traditional Arabian composition. Cashmeran softens the transition into the drydown, lending that powdery, slightly musky haze that makes the base feel lived-in from the first hour. Labdanum and incense anchor the foundation in resinous warmth, while vetiver and sandalwood keep the whole thing from tipping into sweetness. It's a thoughtful structure, less about spectacle and more about a steady, controlled burn.
The evolution
Montana opens with a deceptive brightness, bergamot and berries lifting the top notes into something almost cheerful before pimento black pepper grounds the energy. The first twenty minutes feel like a dressed-up aperitif, polished and social, the kind of opening that could pass for a mainstream floriental before the woods take over. The pepper does more than add heat; it sharpens the citrus and pushes the berries toward a darker, almost jammy edge, giving the top a sense of direction rather than letting it float. Then the heart takes over. Akigalawood and cashmeran arrive together, bringing that woody, slightly metallic warmth that turns the composition inward. Akigalawood reads a bit like a cleaner, more mineral oud, while cashmeran adds that dry, suede-like softness that makes everything feel tactile.
Cultural impact
Montana reflects Gissah's interest in the resinous vocabulary that runs through much of Middle Eastern perfumery, with labdanum, incense, and oud forming the backbone of the composition. The fragrance treats those traditional materials through a modern lens, balancing the heavier resin notes with bergamot, berries, and a clean woody heart of akigalawood and cashmeran. Vetiver and sandalwood in the base keep the profile grounded and wearable, pulling the resinous elements toward a softer, more contemporary finish.
