The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Fang set out to bottle the feeling of wandering a 19th-century Taiwanese greenhouse, a place where cultivated vines and wild herbs coexist. Launched in 2022, No.2 Greenhouse Adventure 1899 draws on the house love for precise narratives, translating the crisp air of glass panes into a scent that feels simultaneously historical and strange. The inclusion of shiso, a Japanese herb rarely seen in Western perfumery, reflects Fang commitment to botanical specificity over generic green accords.
Each note serves a structural purpose within the arc. Shiso provides the initial herbaceous jolt, lemon the necessary brightness to keep it from becoming too medicinal, and frankincense the resinous anchor that prevents the opening from dissipating entirely. The heart notes then offer a floral interlude that rewards patience. The drydown, heavy on balsamic resins like takamaka and benzoin, creates the warmth necessary for longevity on skin while maintaining the green thread established in the opening through galbanum. Gold functions as the final statement, a metallic accord that sets this composition apart from more conventional greenhouse fragrances by adding an element of the unexpected.
The evolution
The fragrance moves from the bracing clarity of its opening, where shiso and lemon create an immediate impression of greenhouse air meeting morning sun, into the quieter intimacy of the heart. Neroli and jasmine soften the trajectory while rosewood provides structure. The drydown, built around takamaka and benzoin, becomes almost resinous and warm, evoking the way sunlight heats humid air trapped beneath glass. Gold lingers as the final impression, a metallic whisper rather than a shout, suggesting something precious and slightly otherworldly about the experience of wandering these historic grounds.
Cultural impact
Greenhouse Adventure 1899 draws inspiration from Taiwan’s historic greenhouse farms, where Japanese shiso was cultivated alongside citrus orchards during the late 19th century. The scent captures the agricultural exchange between Taiwan and Japan, reflecting the era’s blend of local tradition and colonial influence. By evoking the crisp herbaceous aroma of shiso and the bright zest of lemon, the fragrance honors the region’s botanical heritage while introducing Western incense traditions through frank incense, creating a cross‑cultural olfactory narrative that resonates with modern consumers seeking authentic, place‑based experiences.
