The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Jérôme Di Marino designed Initial For Tonight as a modern aromatic-spicy composition built around an unlikely pairing: warm toffee and Provençal lavender, anchored by tonka bean and guaiac wood. Launched in 2023, the fragrance opens with crisp, bright spice before settling into its sweet, resinous heart. The combination of sugary warmth and herbal restraint creates an interesting tension that holds the scent together. The name says it all. It's for tonight, and it knows it.
What makes this composition interesting is the tension Di Marino sustains across the wear. The opening is all bright, crisp spice, pink pepper and cardamom against juniper's cool edge. Then toffee arrives in the heart, sweet and almost unexpectedly soft. The lavender arrives herbal and dry, bridging the gap between that bright top and the warm base. There's a friction here: the gourmand sweetness from the toffee doesn't quite resolve against lavender's austere character, and that tension keeps the fragrance from becoming one thing.
The evolution
The opening hits bright, pink pepper and cardamom sparking with a cool juniper edge. Lavender arrives fast, herbal and dry, and then toffee slides in, sweet and warm. That's the surprise: a gourmand heart wrapped in aromatics. The drydown is where it earns its name. Tonka bean, labdanum, guaiac wood. Close. Warm. The woody base takes over as the toffee softens, and the sillage stays strong for the first few hours before settling intimate.
Cultural impact
Initial For Tonight arrived in 2023 with a modern take on an established character, warm, sweet, and aromatic, in an accessible format. The fragrance performs well for the cost, lasting through a full workday and into evening. It's reliable, appealing, and works without demanding constant attention.
