The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Eau de Caramel returned in 2025 as the latest entry in ESSNCE's Originals Sweet Treats collection, reviving the house's first caramel experiment from 1992. The brief asked the in-house team to bottle the feeling of warm caramel sauce, the kind that pools over a spoon on a cool evening. Using a concentration of real caramel accord and a salted caramel ice cream nuance, the team built an opening that reads like a confectionery counter at dusk.
The note philosophy at ESSNCE treats caramel not as a single ingredient but as a spectrum, from dark burnt sugar to pale salted cream. Pairing salted caramel ice cream with caramel popcorn bridges the cold and the warm, the sweet and the toasted. Tonka bean and coumarin absorb the sweetness into something earthier, preventing the fragrance from becoming one-note candy.
The evolution
The fragrance moves through three distinct phases. At the opening, caramel and salted caramel ice cream create a sticky-sweet, dairy-tinged impression that is immediately recognizable and disarmingly simple. The heart introduces caramel popcorn, which adds a toasted, slightly savory dimension while white chocolate keeps the composition plush and confectionery-forward. The drydown leans on coumarin, musk, tonka bean, and vanilla to create a warm, cuddly base that feels like the aftermath of a caramel dessert: sweet, slightly spicy, and very close to the skin.
Cultural impact
Caramel has long been a symbol of indulgence, tracing its roots from ancient Middle Eastern confectionery to modern dessert culture. In many societies, the rich, buttery flavor evokes celebrations, family gatherings, and seasonal treats. The salted caramel twist adds a contemporary edge, reflecting today’s love for sweet‑salty contrasts. This fragrance captures that heritage, turning a familiar taste into a wearable memory that resonates with both nostalgic and forward‑looking sensibilities, making it a cultural bridge between tradition and trend.
