Why it exists.
The beginning
Purple Rain: Trifecta arrived in 2024 as part of Ensar Oud's ongoing exploration of multi-origin oud compositions, a series that treats rare agarwood as material worth studying in combination rather than isolation. Three oud sources appear here, Cambodian, Papua, and Vietnamese, layered together with Indian oud to create a single composition rather than a set of extraits. Ensar Oud has built its identity around sourcing rare natural oud oils and crafting compositions aimed at collectors who evaluate fragrance by provenance and material integrity. The name 'Trifecta' refers to this three-source architecture, a deliberate convergence of distinct regional ouds within one bottle.
Stacking Cambodian, Papua, and Vietnamese ouds alongside Indian oud, Tibetan musk, Kashmiri musk, and Tonkin musk creates a density of animalic and resinous material that defines the composition's center of gravity. The fruity blackcurrant and iris opening acts as a counterweight, bright and slightly powdery, offering lift before the heavier materials settle in. Castoreum and hyraceum bring warmth and depth to the iris, adding a grounded, almost mineral facet before the oud stack fully registers.
The evolution
The first thirty minutes are surprisingly cheerful. Blackcurrant and iris come forward with a powdery, almost candied brightness, less syrupy than one might expect from the listed materials, more like cold fruit under fluorescent light. Spices flicker underneath but don't dominate, adding warmth without pulling focus from the fruit. The composition then shifts. Castoreum and hyraceum emerge, adding a leathery, faintly mineral warmth that changes the mood from playful to considered. Around the two-to-three-hour window, the full oud stack registers: Cambodian, Papua, and Vietnamese, each one introducing its own character, from creamy and barnyard to smoky and almost medicinal, though the precise order of their arrival resists easy labeling. Indian oud joins the conversation, adding its own resinous depth.
