The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Maestrale launched in 2015 as a unisex aromatic aquatic fragrance from Dr. Taffi, an Italian house founded in 1987. Its inspiration is tied to the wind off the sea and the scented landscape around Bolgheri, where marine air meets citrus, lavender, herbs, and wood. The name Maestrale evokes that strong, salt-bearing breeze, giving the composition its sense of movement. Rather than presenting freshness as a polished cliché, the fragrance lets it arrive with salt, spice, herbs, and a living green edge. It is a study in contrast: cool air and warm notes, mineral brightness and soft musk, a little wildness held within an easy structure.
What makes Maestrale interesting is the way its marine character shares the stage with a convincing herbal and woody core. Citrus and aquatic notes create the first rush of exposed skin and moving air, while lavender, oregano, basil, and warm spice give the middle a more tactile pulse. Then white musk, woods, and amber settle the whole thing down without erasing its brightness. The result feels less like a beach snapshot and more like weather with texture.
The evolution
Maestrale starts with a brisk lift of citrus and aquatic notes, like opening a window while the sea is still cool. The first impression is bright and exposed, with a saline edge that gives the fragrance its sense of space. As it develops, lavender, oregano, basil, and spice add a green, aromatic heat. The breeze begins to feel lived-in, less like a postcard and more like salt on skin after a long walk. Later, white musk, woody notes, and amber bring a soft, warm foundation. The marine accord can seem to recede, but it leaves a mineral memory behind the woods. After hours, the drydown is where the fragrance settles into its quiet signature: clean musk, warm amber, and a restrained woody trace. It doesn't become heavy. It simply gets closer to the skin, leaving a fresh, faintly warm trail.
Cultural impact
Maestrale sits within Dr. Taffi's botanical Italian register, a fragrance for people who prefer clarity with character over sweetness or heavy intensity. Its seasonal profile is strongest in spring and summer, when its marine freshness and citrus energy feel naturally at home. In a broader scent wardrobe, it offers a polished alternative to dense gourmand or intense woody compositions: refreshing, aromatic, and easy to wear without losing its point of view.
