The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Only The Brave by Bunka landed in October 2009 as a collector's edition, the flacon painted by Bunka, the artist, graphic designer, and tattoo artist whose name it carries. Three perfumers from IFF, Alienor Massenet, Olivier Polge, and Pierre Wargnye, built the composition around a simple Diesel premise: boldness worn close to the skin, not shouted from across the room. The scent itself didn't change from the original Only The Brave. The bottle became the statement.
The leather base does the heavy lifting here, not the aggressive kind that announces itself, but the kind that settles into skin and stays. Violet gives it a powdery softness that keeps the leather from feeling harsh. Amber underneath acts as warmth, not sweetness. What's unusual is the labdanum, resinous, slightly animalic, it adds a dimension that most mainstream leather fragrances avoid. Benzoin and styrax in the drydown make sure the base doesn't just fade quietly. This is a composition that knows what it is and doesn't apologize for it.
The evolution
The opening is all citrus, mandarin and Amalfi lemon hitting bright and immediate. That brightness carries for about an hour before the heart starts to show. Violet and coriander arrive quietly, adding a green-spicy counterpoint to the citrus. Then the leather begins to assert itself. Not aggressive, just present. The amber follows, wrapping around the leather like it was always meant to be there. By hour three, the base takes over. Benzoin and styrax add a balsamic weight that makes the leather feel almost worn-in, comfortable rather than demanding. The drydown lasts another three to four hours. On fabric, it'll ghost for a day.
Cultural impact
Diesel positioned Only The Brave as a statement fragrance, for men who wanted to be noticed without trying. The 2009 launch fit a moment when bold masculine scents were having a cultural moment, and Diesel's fashion reputation lent credibility to the fragrance as an extension of the brand's identity. The Bunka limited edition added a collector's dimension, turning the bottle into artwork.
