Why it exists.
The beginning
Fresh Bloom arrived in 2017 as part of Desigual's expanding fragrance line, the same label that eventually moved beyond its roots into bottled scent. The brief here was simple: a daytime floral that could hold its own, something bright and unapologetic without leaning on the heavier traditions of perfumery. Véronique Nyberg composed it, with Violaine Collas also credited on the formula, and the result leans into a territory that pairs fruit and flower with equal weight. The opening carries raspberry and mangosteen, a less predictable pairing than the usual choices, and the heart pulls in two absolutes, jasmine sambac and May rose, before the composition settles into cedarwood and sandalwood at the base.
What makes the structure worth noticing is the choice of raspberry and mangosteen as the opening notes. Mangosteen brings a sweet-tart juiciness that reads almost candied on the skin, and the syrupy sweetness of the raspberry adds an almost candy-edged sweetness that the May rose absolute in the heart can soften without smothering. Two absolutes do the heavy lifting in the middle, jasmine sambac for warmth and May rose for that dewy, just-picked quality, before cedarwood and sandalwood provide a clean, cream-toned landing.
The evolution
The first hour is where Fresh Bloom earns its name. Raspberry and mangosteen arrive like something poured rather than sprayed, sweet and a little sticky, the kind of opening that registers immediately on a warm commute. Give it twenty minutes and the jasmine sambac starts pushing through, not sharp, more like the air around a bouquet left on a kitchen counter overnight. By the second hour the May rose takes its turn, adding a soft, almost powdered sweetness that keeps the fruit from feeling juvenile. The cedarwood and sandalwood arrive gradually, never fully announcing themselves, more a warmth in the background than a base you can point to and name. At hour four it settles into a creamy, slightly woody skin scent that still carries a ghost of the rose. The composition never demands attention, and that's part of the appeal.
