Heritage
A house, in its own words
Thomas Meyer, a Swiss designer, established Desigual in 1984 in the Barcelona neighbourhood of El Raval. The name Desigual translates from Spanish as unequal or different, reflecting what would become the brand's core identity. Meyer opened his first retail location in Ibiza's port in 1986, setting the tone for a brand that would eventually grow into a global fashion presence. The company built its reputation on bold prints, mismatched patterns, and colorful apparel that stood in sharp contrast to minimalist European fashion trends of the era. Desigual remained primarily a fashion brand for three decades before launching its first fragrances in 2014. This expansion into beauty came during a period when many established fashion houses were deepening their fragrance portfolios. The company is headquartered in Barcelona and expanded to operate across 109 countries by 2022. Unlike heritage perfume houses that can trace their olfactory traditions back generations, Desigual entered perfumery as a relative newcomer, applying its fashion sensibilities to a new category. The brand's growth trajectory has included both physical retail expansion and diversification into accessories and home goods alongside fragrance.
Desigual approaches perfumery with the same visual boldness that defines its apparel. The brand targets a younger demographic compared to traditional fragrance houses, producing scents meant to feel accessible and unpretentious. Rather than positioning itself within luxury niche perfumery, Desigual creates fragrances for everyday wear that align with its colorful, casual aesthetic. The fashion house has historically celebrated individuality and self-expression, values it attempts to translate through fragrance choices that range from bright citrus-forward compositions to warmer, more sensual blends. This approach reflects the brand's Spanish Mediterranean roots, where scent culture tends toward lighter, more refreshing profiles suited to warmer climates. The decision to expand from clothing into fragrance represented an opportunity to extend the Desigual lifestyle experience beyond what customers wear, creating a more holistic brand universe. Fragrance development happens through external collaborations rather than a dedicated in-house perfumery team, allowing the brand to work with various fragrance houses while maintaining its distinct visual identity across product categories.
