Why it exists.
The beginning
DedCool launched in 2018 with a small collection of numbered fragrances, each one building its own world from a handful of strong materials. Fragrance 04 was designed around a specific tension: fig's split personality, green and milky, creamy and vegetal, against black pepper's sharp crack. Patchouli was the obvious anchor, providing an earthy foundation that grounds the more volatile top notes. The combination creates a fragrance that doesn't aim for conventional balance but rather a dynamic interplay between contrasting elements. The fig note unfolds in layers, first presenting its green, slightly watery quality before revealing the creamy, almost coconut-like depth beneath.
Fig is a tricky material in perfumery. It carries a lactonic quality, sometimes creamy, sometimes green and almost watery, depending on how ripe the fruit is when extracted. Paired with black pepper, it creates a tension: warmth against bite, softness against sharpness. The botanical base likely plays a role in how fig persists here, holding its green-milky character through the heart instead of disappearing quickly. The combination brings out fig's full complexity, allowing the material to express both its pastoral freshness and its deeper, more sensual dimensions.
The evolution
The opening hits fast: black pepper's crack followed immediately by fig's green bite. There's a moment, right around 5 minutes, where the two are in perfect tension, neither dominating. Then the citrus arrives. Bergamot and lemon arrive bright and cold, almost aggressive in their clarity. The fig doesn't disappear; it deepens, working underneath the citrus like a second heartbeat. The florals arrive without announcement, freesia's clean sweetness, jasmine's richness, threading through the citrus and fig. The pepper never fully vanishes. It's the through-line. By hour two, the citrus begins to recede. Patchouli takes over, earthy and deep, with sandalwood bringing softness and incense adding a smoky counterpoint. The drydown settles into soft wood, warm skin, and a trace of smoke.

Fragrance 04 offers a distinctive approach to clean, genderless scent design. It presents a different model for what modern fragrance can be, one that rejects traditional categories and invites wearers to experience scent on their own terms.
