The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Lovely Cream arrived in autumn of 2007 as part of the Be Gourmand debut, a new collection of perfumes and scented lines built around the colors and smells of traditional Parisian patisseries. Where most gourmand launches reach for caramel and chocolate, the scent pulls a quieter thread: the soft, sweet cream that fills a pastry case between the showpieces. The inspiration is patisserie-adjacent, not patisserie-literal. Lovely Cream sits in that in-between space where lemon curd meets vanilla custard and nothing tries too hard. The opening carries a bright squeeze of citrus, lemon and lime zest over the very first spritz, and that tartness does real work keeping the eventual sweetness from going heavy.
The clever move here is restraint. A gourmand composition built around creams and sweets could easily drown in vanilla. Instead the citrus stays loud at the top so the base never gets sticky. Lemon and lime do the heavy lifting in the opening, slicing through any cloying sweetness before it has a chance to settle. Then magnolia softens the fall, a rounded, almost waxy floral cushion, so the vanilla that follows reads airy instead of heavy. That tension between bright citrus and creamy warmth is what makes Lovely Cream distinctive.
The evolution
Lovely Cream opens in a bright rush. Lemon and lime hit first, sharp and cold, like biting into citrus rind on a warm day. There's a candied edge to the lime that reads almost like frozen lemonade concentrate, sweet enough to intrigue but tart enough to wake you up. Within the first ten to fifteen minutes the citrus starts to mellow and magnolia steps forward, adding a soft, creamy floral that rounds the sharp edges without flattening them. The transition feels like the moment a cold drink warms in your hand. Then the base takes over, and this is where Lovely Cream earns its name. Vanilla arrives wrapped in white musk, powdery and soft, almost like the scent of powdered sugar settling on a countertop. It stays close to skin and lasts through a full afternoon, four to six hours of that warm, lactonic sweetness. What lingers longest is the musk and vanilla together, a quiet, clean warmth that follows you into the evening without ever raising its voice.
Cultural impact
Lovely Cream sits in a small but specific lane: the citrus-vanilla gourmand. It earns its place by staying light, closer to a fresh cream scent with a sugar edge than a heavy dessert pour. The lemon and lime at the top keep things bright, the magnolia adds a soft floral cushion, and the vanilla base settles into something clean and skin-like rather than syrupy. It wears well in the daytime, reads as effortlessly clean, and pairs naturally with the broader Be Gourmand bath-and-body range released alongside it.
