Why it exists.
The beginning
Peter Schmidt composed Cool Water Ice Fresh in 2010 as a limited offshoot of the Davidoff Cool Water line. Ice Fresh leans harder into the cold pole of that equation, swapping oceanic softness for sharper, more crystalline territory. The result reads less like ocean spray and more like crushed ice dissolving in sparkling water. The opening hits with a bright citrus burst, almost tart, where lemon and grapefruit mingle with a green mint coolness that prickles the nose. Beneath that frosted surface, a subtle aquatic murmur keeps things from feeling stark or synthetic, lending just enough softness to anchor the composition.
The composition does something most aquatic flankers skip: it commits to green instead of leaning purely mineral. Basil and sage form an herbal backbone that pushes the opening's citrus from simple refreshing into something more complex, almost botanical. Spruce sits at the heart, adding a coniferous resin note that reads like cold air over pine needles rather than lumber. It's a small structural choice with outsized impact. The base holds nothing but green notes, refusing to ground the composition in anything warm or resinous. Ice Fresh stays cool because it refuses to warm up at any phase of the wear.
The evolution
The first 20 minutes are pure citrus. Grapefruit, lemon, and mandarin crash in almost aggressively, the kind of opening that announces itself in an elevator and clears the sinuses of anyone nearby. There's a tartness here that borders on sour. Around the 30-minute mark, the citrus pulls back and basil arrives, bringing a peppery green snap that transitions the scent from breakfast-juice territory into something more deliberate. Sage joins shortly after, and the composition settles into its herbal phase. This is where spruce shows up, giving a cool, resinous green that lasts through the 2-hour mark. By hour three the green notes in the base take over, and the scent becomes quieter, closer to the skin, a faint cooling sensation rather than a projection. It lingers as a clean, vaguely herbal trace for another 2-3 hours before fading entirely. The drydown doesn't deepen. It just gets quieter, which is exactly what Ice Fresh is designed to do.
