The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Alexandra Carlin built Refined Woods around Beckham's travels in Asia, translating memory into a woody-spicy composition. The fragrance draws from that journey's sensory landscape, blending cool green herbs with warm woods to create something refined and grounded. Cardamom and citron open with a bright, almost startling clarity, like stepping into a sun-drenched market. The clary sage arrives shortly after, threading green herbalcy through the spiciness and preventing the opening from becoming too sharp. As the top notes soften, a subtle powderiness emerges from the iris, lending an unexpected softness that rounds the edges. The blend creates a sense of warmth and familiarity, as if these notes have always belonged together.
What makes Refined Woods distinctive is its structure. Cardamom and citron arrive sharp, almost confrontational, before clary sage steps in to mediate. That initial brightness gradually gives way to something softer as the green-floral notes move forward. The composition shifts as lavender and geranium enter the heart, bringing a cooling floral quality that tempers the spiciness. Iris lingers beneath the surface, adding a quiet powdery quality that threads through the mid-section.
The evolution
The opening hits bright and sharp, cardamom cutting through the citron like a door thrown open. Clary sage arrives within minutes, softening the trajectory. A subtle powdery quality develops as iris and lavender settle in, adding a quiet refinement to the composition. The heart unfolds into lavender and geranium, a green-floral current that moves through the composition like a cooling breeze. Iris adds a quiet powdery undertone that persists through the mid-section, giving the heart a subtle richness. The drydown is where Refined Woods earns its name. Cedarwood provides the structure, vetiver adds earthy depth with a slight smoky edge, and tonka bean softens everything with a warm, slightly sweet presence that lingers close to the skin. This is the part worth waiting for, as the fragrance transforms from bright and assertive to something more settled and intimate.
Cultural impact
Refined Woods speaks to a man who wants something polished without being ostentatious. The woody-spicy DNA references a tradition of refined masculine scent, drawing from the heritage of classic men's fragrances. The composition manages to feel both familiar and fresh, honoring established conventions while offering its own character. There's a restraint here that separates it from more assertive offerings, something that rewards attention without demanding it.
