The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
d'Annam, founded in Vietnam in 2023, creates gender-neutral scents that transform personal memories and cultural landscapes into olfactory chapters. Chapter 2: Memories of Japan led to Hinoki Meditation, conceived in 2024 and crafted by Vietnamese perfumer Anh Ngo. The brief was simple: capture the stillness of hinoki wood in a Japanese meditation space. No opening fanfare, no base note denouement. Just the clean, contemplative presence of hinoki sustained from first spray to final fade. Anh Ngo, working within the brand's ethos of turning place into portable memory, built the fragrance around the idea of immediacy, of arriving at presence without transition.
The note selection philosophy prioritizes coherence over complexity. Hinoki Meditation could have been built with a traditional opening, a distinct drydown, but d'Annam chose to eliminate these phases entirely in favor of sustained presence. The spiced notes and sandalwood are not modifiers but equals in a heart accord designed for longevity. Cypress and green notes exist to keep the heavier woods from becoming claustrophobic. The frankincense adds spiritual dimension without religious connotation. Every note serves the central idea: a single moment of meditation, extended.
The evolution
The heart accord builds outward from a clean hinoki core, its natural dryness complemented immediately by the bright coniferous push of cypress. Green notes emerge within minutes, lending an organic freshness that prevents the wood from becoming static. As the spiced notes begin to register, warmth suffuses the composition, and frankincense adds the faintest wisps of sacred smoke. The evolution here is horizontal rather than vertical: the same notes deepen and quiet over time rather than give way to new ones. Sandalwood provides the creamy foundation that keeps the spiced warmth from becoming harsh, while hinoki remains the constant, the anchor. By the time projection weakens hours later, the fragrance has simply exhaled, grown quieter, more intimate, while retaining its essential character.
Cultural impact
Hinoki Meditation reflects a growing appreciation for cultural authenticity in modern perfumery, echoing Japan’s reverence for nature and Vietnam’s aromatic traditions. By integrating Hinoki cypress, a symbol of Japanese temples, with spice notes reminiscent of Vietnamese markets, the fragrance bridges two distinct yet complementary heritage streams. This cross‑cultural dialogue resonates with consumers seeking depth beyond fleeting trends, encouraging a broader conversation about how scent can honor and reinterpret regional identities.
