The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Rosa Vaia named this one for what it is: tuberose, amped up and pushed past comfortable. The 2023 release is part of Coquillete's Capsule Collection. Vaia built Tubexotic around the tension between creamy florals and something darker underneath, a leathery current that surfaces in the base and keeps the sweetness from becoming dessert. The name is honest. The scent is, too. This is tuberose as an assertion, not an apology, bold enough to stand alone yet clever enough to know when to pull back. The florals are lush and unapologetic in their richness, but that darker note threaded through the base prevents the whole composition from sliding into pure indulgence.
What makes Tubexotic distinctive is the coconut shell note arriving in the base alongside sandalwood and tonka bean. It's a move that could read purely tropical, but here the coconut has weight, almost toasted, warmed by amber and grounded by labdanum. The benzoin appears twice in the pyramid, bridging heart and base, giving the fragrance a resinous backbone that prevents it from floating away into pure sweetness. Black pepper and clove in the heart keep the florals honest, adding spice that prevents the composition from becoming one-note lush.
The evolution
The opening hits fast and full. Moroccan jasmine, ylang-ylang, and orange blossom arrive together, not layered, but stacked. There's an immediate richness that doesn't ease in. Thirty minutes in, the tuberose claims the center while black pepper and clove begin their work. Benzoin adds warmth underneath. The coconut isn't audible yet, that's the drydown talking. By hour two, the florals begin to soften, the spice settles, and the creamy base starts to emerge. The coconut begins to assert itself alongside sandalwood and tonka bean, while amber and benzoin round out the composition. This is where the fragrance finds its final character, warm and close to the skin, the florals fully receded but not forgotten.
Cultural impact
As part of Coquillete's collection, Tubexotic occupies distinct territory. The warmth and coconut note differentiate it from the house's other floral explorations, offering something that feels simultaneously tropical and grounded. The extract concentration gives the fragrance presence and depth, supporting the unusual coconut-tuberose pairing that characterizes the drydown. It stands apart in the lineup, a composition that rewards attention to how its notes interact and evolve rather than making an immediate impression and fading.
