The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Moss+ arrived in 2021 as an evolution of Commodity's original Moss, not a replacement, but an amplification. Donna Ramanauskas kept what worked: the green-citrus core of bergamot, oakmoss, and petitgrain that made the first version so quietly compelling. Then she asked what it needed more of. Juniper berry brought a crispness that cut through the sweetness. Amber added warmth underneath. The result feels like the same thought, spoken louder.
What makes Moss+ interesting isn't a single ingredient, it's the layering of fresh and grounded that Commodity does well across its line. The bergamot opens bright and citrusy, but the oakmoss is already there underneath, holding everything down. Elemi resin adds a slight resinous quality that keeps the opening from feeling like cleaning product. By the time you reach the base, the composition has shifted from green to warm-woody without ever announcing the transition. It's seamless in a way that simpler fragrances aren't.
The evolution
The opening hits quickly, bergamot, grapefruit, a hint of ozonic that reads as outdoor air rather than synthetic freshness. Petitgrain arrives within minutes, bringing a green bitterness that rounds out the citrus. The transition to the heart isn't dramatic; it's more like the brightness dims and the green deepens simultaneously, eucalyptus lending a clean herbal quality that feels almost medicinal. The drydown is where Moss+ earns its name. Oakmoss becomes the star, not the sharp, institutional kind, but something softer, earthier. Musk and cashmere wood keep it close, amber adding a warmth that prevents it from going too austere. This is the phase that lingers close to the skin for hours, developing new facets as the day progresses.
Cultural impact
Moss+ sits in the green-fresh category alongside fragrances like Le Labo's Bergamote 22, scents that prioritize complexity over projection. It's the kind of fragrance that reads as thoughtful rather than loud. The green-citrus-moss combination has a timeless quality that feels neither trendy nor dated. It's the fragrance equivalent of a well-made white shirt, quietly confident and always appropriate.
