The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
This is Pois de Senteur from Caron's Les Fleuris collection, Jean Jacques reimagining sweet peas, those ephemeral spring climbers, as a fragrance that refuses to fade quietly. The name means sweet pea in French, and the concept translates into something lush, opulent, and unmistakably Caron: a garden at peak bloom, honeyed and unapologetic. The 2021 release positions itself within a house known for opulent intensity and daring contrasts. Rather than playing it safe with delicate florals, Jean Jacques built this around yellow and white florals in concentrations that make the composition feel substantial from the first spray.
The unusual element here is the pyramidal structure itself, yellow florals at the center rather than hovering in the top notes. Narcissus brings an indolic, almost animalic quality that transforms when balanced against honey, jasmine, orange blossom, and ylang-ylang. It's the sweet creaminess of the heart that prevents this from reading as merely romantic or decorative. Bergamot opens with tart citrus, Bulgarian rose adds structure, and Peru balsam with vanilla anchor everything into a warm, resinous base that gives Caron their signature longevity and projection.
The evolution
The opening hits cool and green, bergamot's citrus brightness over blackcurrant's tart berry quality. Within minutes, Bulgarian rose arrives and dominates the first hour. The sillage is strong. People will notice. The heart phase belongs to yellow florals and honey. Narcissus brings an unexpected animalic edge, not dirty, but present. Jasmine and ylang-ylang amplify the sweetness into something almost overwhelming. Orange blossom water absolute adds a soapy, waxy quality that rounds the composition into classic territory. The drydown reveals the real payoff. Peru balsam and vanilla create a warm, resinous cushion that lingers for hours, close to the skin, intimate, powdery in the best sense. This is where the fragrance earns its Caron name. Eight to ten hours on most skin types. The next morning, there's still something there, a warm, honeyed memory on fabric.
Cultural impact
Pois de Senteur occupies an interesting position, its vintage character and bold floral intensity appeal to those seeking something that feels classical rather than contemporary. The combination of Bulgarian rose, honey, and vanilla creates a sweet, traditional floral that stands apart from current market trends, drawing those who appreciate heritage perfumery over modern niche releases.
