The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Almost Dawn is part of the Mezzanotte collection from Bottega Veneta, launched in 2025 alongside Hinoki and Goodmorning Midnight. The inspiration came from a specific moment: the hour before dawn when the world holds its breath, that space between night ending and morning beginning where everything feels possible. The name itself says it all, what almost arrives, what is about to begin. Truffle brings earthy, almost fungal depth while vanilla offers sweetness, but Almost Dawn makes them coexist rather than compete. The truffle note opens with dark, mineral-rich tones, like damp earth in a forest at first light. It lingers through the drydown, grounding the composition with its subtle subterranean character.
Truffle brings an earthy, almost fungal depth that most houses treat as an accent. Vanilla brings warmth and sweetness that can easily tip into gourmand territory. Almost Dawn does neither, it bridges them. Chestnut wood is the bridge: warm, woody, slightly sweet, with a roasted quality that softens the truffle's edge and supports the vanilla's creaminess. The result is a fragrance that feels intimate without being shy, expansive without being loud.
The evolution
The opening arrives quietly. Pink pepper and black pepper give a brief flash of brightness, not loud, just enough to announce arrival, before the truffle accord takes over. Within minutes, the composition shifts from aromatic spice to earthy depth. The truffle doesn't smell like food. It smells like soil, like something pulled from the ground after rain, like the forest floor at the edge of dawn. Then the chestnut wood appears. This is the heart of Almost Dawn: warm, woody, slightly sweet, with a roasted quality that bridges the gap between the earthy truffle and the vanilla to come. Patchouli keeps everything grounded, clean and dry rather thanDirty. As the drydown develops, the vanilla absolute takes over. This is not a shy vanilla, it dominates the final hours. But it reads more as warmth than sweetness. Tonka bean softens the edges. Sylvamber adds a powdery, ambery quality. Cedarwood and Clearwood ground the composition, keeping the sweetness from overwhelming.
Cultural impact
Almost Dawn joins Bottega Veneta's 2025 Mezzanotte collection alongside Hinoki and Goodmorning Midnight. The truffle-vanilla combination is featured in this fragrance, bringing together two notes that rarely appear together in perfumery. The composition creates a scent that feels both grounded and nuanced, with earthy truffle providing depth while vanilla adds warmth. This approach distinguishes the fragrance from more conventional scent profiles, offering something that rewards close attention.
