The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Intrige arrived in 2018 as one third of Babylon Berlin's debut trio, a collection designed as fragments of a single imagined chronicle. The trio pairs Intrige with two companion names drawn from German: Sünde (sin) and Liebe (love). Together they read less like a product line and more like a triptych of feeling, each bottle meant to stand alone yet converse with the others when worn in rotation. The Berlin imprint positions the release as a mood piece, an opening statement from a house that seemed to arrive with its visual world already fully formed: moody still-life photography, restrained typography, and a quiet confidence in letting the juice speak. For a debut, the restraint is notable.
What makes Intrige interesting is its restraint with the smoky register. The incense opens without pyrotechnics, just a dry, resinous hush. Then the sandalwood-tobacco pairing does the heavy lifting in the heart, two materials that share a dry, woody sweetness and reinforce each other rather than competing. Cypriol oil, sometimes called nagarmotha, anchors the base with its earthy, vetiver-adjacent darkness, a root note that bridges leather and musk without the usual sweetness of either. The leathery accord stays dry and slightly mineral, more the inside of an old coat pocket than a saddle shop.
The evolution
The first twenty minutes are dominated by the incense, a thin, smoky veil that feels almost atmospheric, like walking past a room where something is burning. Around the thirty-minute mark the sandalwood surfaces, creamy and quiet, and the tobacco arrives as a dried-leaf dryness rather than the sweet, cherry-pipe variety. The leather surfaces slowly, never aggressively, threading through the musk by the second hour. By hour three the composition has gone fully intimate: the smoke has burned off, the tobacco has mellowed into something almost suede-like, and the nagarmotha lends a cool, rooty depth that settles into fabric. Community wearers rate longevity in the moderate range, clustering around the middle of the scale, which matches the scent's overall temperament.
Cultural impact
Intrige wears like a fragrance for someone who prefers the back booth to the center table. Its dry, smoky character and moderate projection make it a quieter choice, a composition that earns attention through restraint rather than volume. The incense and tobacco read as atmospheric and lived-in, the kind of scent that suggests a long evening indoors rather than a night out in a crowded room. There's a dryness here that feels intentional: the sandalwood never turns creamy-sweet, the leather stays matte, and the nagarmotha keeps the whole thing tethered to something earthy and cool.
