The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Wicked Stepmother arrived in 2017 as part of a collaborative collection called East of the Sun and West of the Moon, a joint project between Arcana Wildcraft, Nui Cobalt Designs, Blooddrop (later renamed Astrid Perfumes), and Corvus Cosmetics. The theme was fairy tale, specifically the Nordic kind, where the woods are full of bears who are princes and the stepmothers carry more than just authority. Arcana took the stepmother. The result is a composition that translates the archetype of the woman who knows too much, and knows she's being judged for it, into scent. The fragrance treats the stepmother figure not as villain but as the person in the room who has already read the last page. Arcana's approach to narrative perfume, building compositions around characters, myths, and ideas rather than abstract accords, finds one of its sharpest expressions here. The name does heavy lifting, and the scent under it earns every implication.
The note structure is where the narrative lives. Dried fig and benzoin do the opening work, sweet, dense, and slightly leathery, the kind of sweetness that comes with texture rather than light. Frankincense and tobacco move in at the heart, the incense carrying the resinous weight of a space that has been occupied by something ritual. Vanilla runs underneath, but this is no dessert vanilla. It is the darkest version of the material, the kind that reads more like bark than frosting. The combination of tobacco and fig is unusual enough to register as a choice rather than a default, and the frankincense ties the whole thing to a long tradition of resinous orientals without falling into pastiche.
The evolution
The first 15 minutes are the sweetest the fragrance will ever be. Dried fig leads, with benzoin close behind, giving a dense, almost candied opening that feels warm and slightly chewy. The vanilla is present from the start, but it stays low, a background hum rather than a solo. Around the 30-minute mark, the frankincense and tobacco begin to surface, and the character shifts. The sweetness doesn't vanish, it deepens. The fig recedes slightly, replaced by a resinous, smoky quality that reads like incense that has been burning for a while. The benzoin holds the warmth steady, and the tobacco adds a dry, slightly bitter edge that keeps the vanilla honest. By the 2-hour mark, the composition has settled into its real personality: smoky, resinous, and quietly sweet, with the tobacco and frankincense now leading and the fig and vanilla supporting from underneath. The 4-6 hour range is where the fragrance lives. On fabric, the resins and tobacco cling for considerably longer, sometimes into the next day, leaving a warm, slightly smoky trace. The drydown is the best part.
Cultural impact
Wicked Stepmother sits within the indie perfume tradition of collaborative collections, specifically the 2017 East of the Sun and West of the Moon project that brought together Arcana Wildcraft, Nui Cobalt Designs, Blooddrop, and Corvus Cosmetics around a fairy-tale theme. This collaboration brought together several indie houses under a shared creative umbrella, with each brand contributing its own interpretation of fairy-tale characters and stories through scent.
