The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
White Bear joined Arcana Wildcraft's catalog in 2017, born from a collaborative project that brought the house together with fellow indie brands Nui Cobalt Designs, Astrid Perfumes, and Corvus Cosmetics. Each perfumer contributed their own reading of a shared theme, a layered exercise in interpreting a single source text across multiple creative sensibilities. The release was part of the 'East of the Sun and West of the Moon' collection, a themed set whose name borrows from the Nordic fairy tale of the same title. White Bear takes its place within that lineup as one of the participating interpretations, a single chapter in a broader scented anthology.
What makes White Bear unusual is its commitment to a single sensory register: frozen dairy. This one reaches for the ice cream parlor and then immediately complicates it with blackberry, a fruit that arrives sharp and stained, its dark juice cutting into the pale sweetness around it. The tension between cold cream and dark berry does most of the composition's work, pulling the wearer in two directions at once. There's no floral bridge, no spice lift, no woody foundation trying to give it gravity.
The evolution
The first ten minutes belong to blackberry, cool and bright, almost like the fruit was just crushed over ice. That initial tartness has a stained, inky quality to it, the kind of dark sweetness that clings to fingertips after handling fresh berries. Then the coconut arrives, not toasted, not suntan-oiled, but the soft white flesh of fresh coconut cream poured slowly. Within thirty minutes the vanilla ice cream note takes over, and the blackberry retreats to a supporting role, adding a faint tart sweetness at the edges rather than dominating the composition. The two notes share the stage for a while, each offering the other a counterbalance, before the cream wins out and the berry becomes a quiet hum beneath. The drydown is pure lactonic warmth, the impression of whipped cream that's been sitting on the counter long enough to soften but not spoil.
