The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Nomad's Poem arrived in 2018 as part of And Other Stories' expanding fragrance wardrobe, composed by Jérôme Epinette. The name paints a picture before you even uncork the bottle: someone in motion, writing verses in their head as they move through unfamiliar cities. Not the romantic ideal of travel, but the looser, more intimate version. The half-remembered warmth of somewhere tropical, carried home on skin. Epinette built this around a tension between the dreamy and the grounded. Coconut and florals pull toward fantasy. Patchouli, black amber, and musk anchor everything to the body. Together they create a scent that feels both sunlit and shadowed, like a poem scribbled in a notebook on a long flight home.
What makes the composition worth attention is how Epinette balances the gourmand against the animalic. Coconut is one of the most polar materials in modern perfumery. Done wrong, it reads synthetic, suntan-oily, or juvenile. Here it opens sweet but is quickly escorted by patchouli into something earthier and more grown. The peach in the heart serves as the bridge. Fruit enough to soften the patchouli's herbal edge, warm enough to harmonize with the coconut rather than fight it. Black amber and musk in the base provide that powdery, skin-close quality that turns a sweet composition into something sensual without ever tipping into syrup. The result is gourmand-oriental without the usual cloying weight.
The evolution
The first ten minutes belong to coconut, creamy, softly floral, almost like sunscreen memory without the chemical edge. It reads bright and immediate, the kind of scent that makes you lift your wrist to your nose just to confirm. Around the twenty-minute mark, the peach arrives and something shifts. The floral top notes start to recede, making room for a juicier, warmer heart. Patchouli surfaces here, not sharp or dirty, but smooth, almost velvety, lending the composition depth it didn't have at the opening. This is the phase where the scent stops announcing itself and starts revealing layers. Past the two-hour mark, the base takes over completely. Black amber and musk settle into skin, leaving behind a powdery warmth that lasts the rest of the afternoon.
Cultural impact
Nomad's Poem offers a particular combination: coconut sweetness tempered by earthy patchouli and warmed by black amber, a blend that bridges gourmand and oriental territory without tipping fully into either. The result is a body mist that reads composed rather than playful, grounded rather than tropical-stereotype. The coconut provides approachability, the florals lend softness, and the base notes give the composition weight and staying power on skin. Wearers often notice how the patchouli shifts the scent away from simple sweetness, adding a complexity that makes it feel more like a fragrance than a mist.
