The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Neva Winged Lions is part of Alghabra Parfums' Russia Collection, released in 2021 under the formulation of Anas Alghabra. The name carries a sense of stillness, of weight held in place rather than momentum carried forward. You feel it immediately on skin: a composition that refuses to rush. The opening moves with bergamot's clean sharpness and freesia's green-pepper brightness, two notes that cut rather than charm. As they settle, the heart unfurls, cotton flower wrapped around jasmine tea, both reading soft and slightly vegetal, like fabric warmed by sunlight rather than anything overtly floral. Violet anchors everything underneath, and it does so alone, carrying more weight than most bases spread across three or four materials. The result is something unusually composed. No excess.
The unusual choice here is restraint. Neva Winged Lions builds around rose and peony, two florals that typically invite sweetness piled on top, amplifying the bouquet into something lush and heady. This composition refuses that invitation. Instead, it pulls toward a cotton flower and jasmine tea heart that reads almost textile, a softness that evokes clean linen dried in cool air rather than the full sweetness of a traditional floral arrangement. Violet takes the entire base, one note carrying the weight most compositions spread across three or four.
The evolution
The opening is the brightest the composition gets. Bergamot cuts sharp, freesia adds that peppery green sweetness, and peony rounds everything out with a dewy, slightly soapy quality. Turkish rose hovers underneath, barely announced, more suggestion than statement. As the citrus recedes, cotton flower takes over. This is where the fragrance finds its real character: clean, soft, almost fabric-like. Not the powdery softness of talc but the warmer softness of cotton dried on a line. Jasmine tea adds a faint green steam to this phase, something vegetal and steeped, like leaves left too long in warm water. The drydown is unexpectedly minimal. Violet does nearly all the work, and it does so with a dusty, slightly candied quality that recalls Parma violet sweets without the full sugar hit. As hours pass on skin, the violet never fully disappears.
Cultural impact
Neva Winged Lions sits within Alghabra's Russia Collection, a thematic grouping that connects geographic inspiration to scent. The collection itself signals a house willing to draw from specific cultural reference points, to name a fragrance after a city landmark and let that name do some of the storytelling. This particular composition carries a distinctly quiet energy, the kind of understatement that distinguishes it from more opulent offerings in the broader fragrance landscape. That restraint gives it a distinct identity, a voice that doesn't need volume to be heard. You smell it once and recognize the approach.
