Heritage
A house, in its own words
Mohammed Khair Alghabra established his fragrance house in 1973 within Old Damascus, drawing inspiration from a city whose documented history stretches back millennia. The decision to launch in this ancient urban center positioned the brand from its inception with a deep connection to Middle Eastern olfactory traditions. After building the early years of his business in the Syrian capital, Alghabra moved his operations to Istanbul, where he began collaborating with local fragrance companies and established himself as an exporter of Fine Fragrances. This period working within the Turkish fragrance industry provided the founder with broader access to raw materials, production partnerships, and international distribution channels. The experience gained as an exporter shaped the brand's subsequent direction, allowing Alghabra to develop a network that supported independent niche production. Over subsequent decades, the house expanded its collection strategy, introducing themed series such as A Tribute to Art alongside single releases named for destinations and concepts. The continuity of the brand across more than fifty years reflects sustained demand among fragrance collectors for scents informed by the founder's original vision, while the Istanbul base enabled the house to serve customers across multiple regions. Alghabra Parfums approaches fragrance creation through a lens shaped by its founder's experience in both Eastern and international markets. The house organizes its portfolio into five collections, suggesting a systematic approach to categorizing scents by theme rather than releasing individual fragrances without structure. The A Tribute to Art collection indicates an intention to position certain releases as expressions of creative and cultural movements, linking perfumery to broader artistic contexts. Many of the brand's fragrance names reference geographic landmarks and regions, including Eye of Seven Hills (a reference to Istanbul's topology), Bosphorus Pearl, and Ottoman Treasure. This naming convention suggests an emphasis on place and cultural heritage as sources of meaning. The tobacco-focused releases (Cuban Tobacco and Jamaican Tobacco) indicate an engagement with classic perfumery materials approached from an independent perspective. The house appears to prioritize storytelling through scent, with each fragrance named to evoke imagery and associations beyond the olfactory experience itself. The brand's longevity of over fifty years suggests that this philosophy has resonated with an audience seeking fragrances with narrative depth.
