The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Vaudou arrived in 2021 as one half of a debut pair from Alexx and Anton. The fragrance draws on spiritual themes, carrying with it an undertone of consciousness and the meeting of worlds, a nod to ancient ritual and the contemplative side of perfumery. Composed by Will Inrig, Vaudou was developed in close dialogue with the brand's broader artistic language. The collaboration brings perfumery into the realm of artistic expression, with each note chosen for its presence and meaning rather than mass appeal. The brand frames perfume as a ritual act, and Vaudou embodies that philosophy: fragrance as invocation, not accessory. The composition leans into the earthy, the ceremonial, and the quietly transgressive.
What sets Vaudou apart is its refusal to soften the spiritual register with sweetness. The saffron-magnolia opening is striking enough, but the real conversation happens in the heart, where cypriol oil (also called nagarmotha) brings a dark, earthy root character that registers as something raw and mineral, far from the polished florals that dominate modern perfumery. Cypriol carries a smoky, almost burnt quality, the kind of note that anchors rather than decorates, giving the composition its weight and its willingness to sit in uncomfortable territory.
The evolution
The opening establishes itself quickly: magnolia lifts its cream-white petals while saffron threads through, warm and slightly metallic, like brass catching candlelight. There's a floral sweetness here, but it's weighted, not decorative. The saffron has a leathery edge that keeps the magnolia from floating away. As the composition moves forward, the heart takes over. Cypriol oil arrives with its distinctive dark earthiness, the kind of scent that makes you think of soil after rain, of roots, of stone. Frankincense opens above it, sharp and cooling at first, then settling into something more meditative. Vetiver weaves through the heart, and moss closes the circle, pulling the composition downward into shadow. The floral opening has almost entirely dissolved. What's left feels less like a garden and more like a threshold. The drydown is where Vaudou settles into its true register.
Cultural impact
Vaudou's 2021 release alongside Coquet introduced Alexx and Anton to the independent fragrance conversation, a duo approaching perfume through the lens of conceptual artistic practice rather than commercial trend. Their 2023 Pitti Fragranze appearance under the 'True Niche' banner extended that positioning within the niche community. The composition leans on cypriol oil and frankincense rather than familiar oud-amber territory, setting it apart from many of the more commercially coded fragrances in the indie space.
