The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Elegant arrived in 2015 as part of Al-Jazeera Perfumes' Art Collection, a space that allowed the house to explore directions outside their core oud-and-incense offerings. Dominique Ropion built the opening around mandarin, peach, and pineapple. The citrus provides an immediate brightness, the peach adds a soft juiciness, and the pineapple lends a tropical quality that gives the composition depth. The combination creates a warmth that feels natural and considered, drawing the wearer into the heart of the fragrance with a sweetness that doesn't announce itself but gradually becomes apparent.
The structure reveals itself through the intersection of fruit and florals. The mandarin orange blossom at the heart interacts with the sweetness from the opening, creating a dynamic tension within the composition. Rose and violet form an integral part of the middle notes, adding their own character to the blend. The amber in the base provides a warm foundation that anchors the florals and extends the overall presence of the fragrance into its final stages.
The evolution
The opening is immediate: mandarin, peach, and pineapple arrive juicy and unapologetic. The pineapple doesn't dominate, but it gives the top a tropical weight that keeps the citrus from feeling fleeting. The orange blossom becomes more pronounced as the initial burst settles, taking its place as a central element. Rose and violet layer in alongside, each contributing their own character without overwhelming the composition. The base is where Elegant earns its name. Patchouli and Cypriol give it an earthy, almost animalic undertone that provides contrast to the brighter opening notes. Amber Xtreme extends everything into a warm, powdery drydown that lingers for hours. Cashmeran softens the landing without making it soft.
Cultural impact
Elegant occupies a distinctive position within the Al-Jazeera Perfumes range, sitting alongside contemporary florals that show a different side of the house. The inclusion of Cypriol and patchouli in the base adds a complexity that distinguishes it from more straightforward fruity-floral compositions. For those exploring the house's catalog, it represents an invitation to discover how the brand approaches modern perfumery.
