The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Acque di Italia founded in 2015 with a stated mission to map Italys terroir into wearable scents, sourcing botanicals from Sicily to Sardinia and blending in Florence. Oleandro di Panarea draws from the Aeolian landscape, an island where wild oleander grows against volcanic cliffs and sea-swept winds. The brand sourced botanical extracts representing this environment, with the nerium oleander note intended to evoke the plants green-bitter floral signature as it grows along coastal paths.
The note selection reflects a philosophy of place: gardenia and aquatic top notes capture the island mornings, the heart of nerium oleander with supporting florals maps the overgrown gardens, and the amber-vetiver-cedarwood base grounds the wearer in volcanic stone and coastal scrub. Pairing nerium oleander with champa flower creates a tension between the familiar and the exotic that mirrors Panarea itself: small, windswept and unlike anywhere else.
The evolution
The opening burst of gardenia and water lily reads as coastal freshness, a brief shimmering layer before the nerium oleander emerges and asserts its presence with a green, slightly bitter floral character not commonly found in mainstream fragrances. Rose and magnolia cushion its sharpness while orchid and champa flower introduce a creamier exotica. As the scent evolves toward the drydown, amber introduces honeyed warmth that softens the florals, and a vetiver and cedarwood base grounds everything in an earthy Mediterranean finish.
Cultural impact
Since its 2020 debut, Oleandro di Panarea has become a quiet cultural reference for Italy’s coastal lifestyle, echoing the island’s tradition of fragrant gardens and sea‑sprayed terraces. The scent is frequently mentioned in regional travel blogs as a sensory bookmark for visitors to Panarea, linking the perfume to local festivals that celebrate marine heritage. Its water‑based notes have inspired designers to incorporate aqua motifs in summer collections, while the oleander heart subtly nods to the island’s historic horticulture. Over the years, the fragrance has been used in curated playlists for seaside events, reinforcing a shared identity among Mediterranean‑inspired creators and reinforcing the brand’s narrative of place‑driven perfumery.
