The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
4160 Tuesdays founder Sarah McCartney has long been fascinated by unusual natural materials, particularly after encountering Australian Buddha Wood a couple of years ago. Her first exploration resulted in The Buddhawood Box, a fragrance so intensely woody that it divided opinion sharply. Some adored its boldness while others found it overwhelming, like being struck with a finely crafted cricket bat. Rather than retreat from that intensity, McCartney wondered what would happen if she softened the entry point with bright bergamot before revealing the wood's full character.
The Buddha Wood and whiskey pairing was deliberate. Both share smoky, warm characteristics that amplify naturally when combined. Boronia and gardenia were selected specifically to provide counterbalance to the wood's intensity. Boronia brings an earthy florality that grounds the composition while gardenia offers creamy white floral softness that prevents the fragrance from becoming too austere. The bergamot opening serves a practical purpose beyond aesthetics, creating an accessible entry point into what could otherwise be an overwhelming sensory experience.
The evolution
The journey begins with bergamot's clean citrus brightness, a single note that opens the door to what follows. The heart introduces Australian Buddha Wood alongside whiskey's warmth, malt's grainy sweetness, boronia's earthy floral quality, and gardenia's creamy white florals. These notes weave together to create something textured and intriguing. The drydown shifts focus to oud's dark depth, sandalwood's creamy warmth, cedarwood's dry aromatic presence, and ambergris's subtle animalic character. Each phase builds on the last, creating a coherent narrative of transformation.
Cultural impact
Bodhi Language, launched by 4160 Tuesdays in 2018, quickly became a cultural touchstone within niche fragrance circles, symbolising a shift toward sustainably sourced Australian botanicals. Its signature Australian Buddhawood resonated with a generation seeking authenticity, while the bergamot opening offered a bright, approachable entry point that bridged classic and modern sensibilities. The fragrance’s narrative of refinement over raw intensity sparked conversations about evolution in perfumery, influencing emerging brands to prioritize balance and storytelling.
