The Story
Why it exists.
Chapter 3: Majestic China marks d'Annam's eastward turn, away from Vietnamese rice paddies and lotus gardens toward the meditative ritual of Chinese tea culture. Perfumer Anh Ngo approached the brief with precision: capture the layered elegance of oolong, but don't stop at the cup. The pomelo was the key, took the bitter depth of roasted tea and gave it somewhere bright and citrus-sour to land. Osmanthus added the floral sweetness that bridges East and West, then Porcelain sealed it with that cool, mineral clarity that makes the whole composition feel neither creamy nor heavy.

The Beginning
The Porcelain note is the hidden architecture here. Most tea fragrances lean into the creamy, lactonic comfort of milk tea or the sweetness of jasmine. Pomelo Oolong refuses both. Instead, that faint glassy mineral quality cuts through the osmanthus and white musk like a cold rim on a warm cup, strange at first, then impossible to imagine this scent without it. It's the difference between a candle and a real pot of tea: one mimics, one remembers what the actual thing feels like on the tongue.
The Evolution
Opens on citrus brightness, pomelo's tart/grassy peel oil, sharp for the first 20 minutes. The oolong arrives quietly, not as a wave but as a settling, that roasted grassy quality threading underneath the citrus until the two become inseparable. Osmanthus emerges around the 30-minute mark, sweet and apricot-floral, softening what was sharp into something more rounded. The white musk appears next, adding that clean skin-close quality that makes the fragrance feel worn rather than applied. Porcelain arrives last, not as a scent so much as a temperature, a cool mineral hollowness that settles into the drydown and carries the remaining hours. The entire arc lasts 6-8 hours on most skin types. The next day, faint traces of osmanthus and mineral keep their residence on fabric.
Cultural Impact
Part of Chapter 3: Majestic China, d'Annam's collection exploring Chinese aesthetics and ritual. The fragrance arrives at a cultural moment when tea as practice (not beverage) has become a global reference point for mindfulness. Wearers describe it as the scent of someone who prefers substance over statement, the kind of person whose tea cup is never empty.
The House
Vietnam · Est. 2023
d'Annam is a Vietnamese fine fragrance house founded in 2023 by Nick Hoang. The brand creates gender-neutral scents that translate personal memories and cultural landscapes into olfactory experiences. Its debut collection, Chapter 1, comprises nine fragrances inspired by Vietnamese heritage, while a second collection explores the aesthetics of Japan. Hoang collaborated with perfumer Anh Ngo and the global fragrance supplier IFF to develop the house's formulations, producing scents that reference experiences like Vietnamese coffee, rice paddies, forest oud, and street pho alongside Japanese whiskey and oolong tea. The brand packages its fragrances in recycled materials and directs a portion of revenue toward children's charities in Vietnam. d'Annam operates at the intersection of personal nostalgia and cultural storytelling, positioning itself as a voice for Asian scent experiences within the niche fragrance market.

Pomelo Oolong sounds like a piano left open in a tea house at dawn, simple, slightly melancholic, beautiful in the way things are when they're purpose-built for contemplation. The Porcelain note has that same quality as a note held too long: it asks you to pay attention to silence between sounds.
