The Story
Why it exists.
Gentle King was born from Tianle Feng’s first encounter with a lion on the Serengeti’s endless plains. The regal yawn, the raw power of the animal, sparked a desire to bottle that untamed reverence. In 2021 the perfumer translated the moment into scent, using peppery sparks to echo the lion’s breath, cedar and hay to suggest the dry grass, and a resinous base that mirrors the lingering heat of the savanna after sunset.

The Beginning
Gentle King was born from Tianle Feng’s first encounter with a lion on the Serengeti’s endless plains. The regal yawn, the raw power of the animal, sparked a desire to bottle that untamed reverence. In 2021 the perfumer translated the moment into scent, using peppery sparks to echo the lion’s breath, cedar and hay to suggest the dry grass, and a resinous base that mirrors the lingering heat of the savanna after sunset.
The pepper duo, Black and Sichuan, creates a sharp, almost electric bite that recalls the lion’s sudden inhale, while aldehydes add a fleeting, metallic shimmer like heat wavering off the horizon. Cedar and Hinoki Wood ground the composition with a forest‑like calm, and oakmoss plus hay evoke the dry, sun‑bleached grasses of the plains. The base weaves frankincense’s incense, violet leaf’s green edge, and oud’s animalic depth, softened by amber, tonka bean and white musk, giving the scent a lingering, dignified warmth that stays close to the skin.
The Evolution
The opening erupts with a peppery snap, blackcurrant’s dark fruit whisper, and aldehydes that flicker like sunrise on dry earth, lasting the first ten minutes. As the heat settles, cedar and Hinoki Wood emerge, delivering a clean, forest‑like calm, while oakmoss and hay weave a dry, sun‑kissed meadow, anchoring the scent between minutes ten and thirty. Around the half‑hour mark, frankincense and oud rise as smoky incense, violet leaf injects a green bite, and amber, tonka bean, and white musk melt into a warm, animalic veil; leather and labdanum add a quiet strength that lingers into the fourth hour. The fragrance maintains a moderate sillage throughout, offering a 4‑6 hour arc that fades gracefully, leaving only a subtle, dignified warmth reminiscent of a savanna dusk.
Cultural Impact
Since its 2021 debut, Gentle King has sparked conversation among niche collectors for its bold lion tribute. Reviewers praise the daring pepper‑on‑amber narrative, while some note the leather note divides opinion. It’s often cited alongside Voice From The Sky’s other story‑driven releases as a scent that invites contemplation rather than trend‑following.
The House
China · Est. 2019
Voice From The Sky is an independent perfume house that emerged from the legacy of a Chinese perfumery family. Founded in 2019 by Tianhe Feng, a second‑generation perfumer, the brand translates personal memory into scent. Its catalogue includes releases such as Gentle King (2021) and First Touch (2023), each framed as a singular narrative rather than a trend‑driven product. The house operates with a modest team, focusing on small‑batch production and transparent ingredient sourcing. By positioning fragrance as a contemplative experience, Voice From The Sky invites collectors to explore scent as a quiet dialogue between past and present.

The fragrance feels like a sunrise over open plains, sharp, warm, and slowly settling into a calm, earthy groove. The primary track captures that transition from bright spark to lingering dusk.
