Why it exists.
The beginning
Chypre 23 arrived in 2018, the work of perfumer Zarko Ahlmann Pavlov. The composition turns its attention to one of perfumery's oldest structures: the chypre accord. Bergamot on top, oakmoss and patchouli underneath, labdanum binding the two halves together. Where most modern chypres layer fruit and sweetness to soften the moss, Pavlov kept the architecture stripped back and let each material carry weight without ornament. The bergamot reads almost citrus-peel sharp at first contact, vivid enough to cut through the denser base waiting below it. The oakmoss beneath has that dry, forest-floor quality, slightly bitter, unmistakably green.
The chypre category carries a long history in fragrance, rooted in a classical accord built on the contrast between bright citrus and an earthy, resinous base. Many contemporary versions soften that contrast, adding florals, fruits, or gourmand layers to make the moss more wearable for a modern audience. ZARKOPERFUME takes a different approach. By using labdanum as the binding agent rather than a dominant note, Pavlov lets the oakmoss and patchouli do the structural work while keeping the whole composition remarkably linear. The bergamot isn't a top note that disappears.
The evolution
The first spray is all bergamot, sharp and bright against the deeper materials already waiting underneath. Within ten minutes the oakmoss starts pushing through, dry and green, like crushed leaves underfoot. The patchouli arrives next, not the sweet, dusty version but something cooler, more mineral, almost stony in the way it settles against skin. From there the composition settles into its core: a continuous loop of citrus over earth, with labdanum giving everything a faintly resinous warmth that you feel more than you smell directly. The green never fully leaves. It fades into a quieter register but the moss character keeps pulsing underneath the lighter materials, maintaining that forest-floor thread from opening to close. On skin, the drydown extends well into the day, holding its shape without turning thin or soapy.
Cultural impact
Chypre 23 occupies an interesting corner of the chypre landscape. It delivers the depth and structural seriousness of a traditional accord while reading clean enough for a contemporary nose. For anyone drawn to the moss-and-citrus backbone of the genre but wary of the heavier, more formal interpretations, this composition offers a version that feels current without sacrificing the architectural integrity that makes chypres worth wearing in the first place. The fragrance rewards attention.
