Why it exists.
The beginning
Hi-Lo Country Summer arrived in 2024 as part of Zara's expanding fragrance line, and it takes its name from an earlier Hi-Lo Country release that launched in 2018. Summer bends that established skeleton toward warmer weather: brighter at the top, softer at the edges, but never losing the leather spine that defined the original. The opening reads lifted and almost sunlit, with bergamot cutting through a layer of green-leaning lavender that feels more herbal than soapy. As that brightness settles, violet moves in alongside it, and the composition pivots. What replaces the crisp opening is something warm, slightly powdery, grounded in smooth leather and rounded tonka.
The interesting move here is restraint. Most compositions pitched at summer tend to strip down to citrus, but Summer keeps leather intact at the heart and lets tonka bean close it out. That gives the composition a center of gravity it wouldn't otherwise have, especially given how the bergamot and lavender opening could easily fly apart into something generic. The violet addition in the middle stage is a quiet choice. It doesn't announce itself. It rounds the leather, softens the transition into tonka, and keeps the whole thing from reading as a straightforward fresh-spicy play.
The evolution
The first stretch of wear is the brightest the fragrance will ever be. Italian bergamot hits sharp and immediate, the kind of citrus that reads more as sunlight than as fruit. Lavender threads underneath, not the soapy barbershop version, but something closer to lavender just pulled from a garden, still holding its stalks. The lavender fades faster than the bergamot, which is the first sign that this isn't going to behave like a typical freshie. Violet arrives in the heart with leather, and the composition pivots. That sunlit opening you expected to last? It's already gone. What replaces it is warm, slightly powdery, grounded. The leather reads smooth, not rough, more like the inside of a car on a hot day than a saddle. Tonka bean takes over the final stretch. It's sweet without being gourmand, closer to warm skin than vanilla extract.
