The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Token Men by VS arrived in 2023 as part of the brand's continued push into men's fragrance. The Italian mandarin, bergamot, and cardamom opening anchors a composition built around aquatic and chypre heart notes, with an amber, patchouli, and musk base. The mandarin brings a bright, almost sweetness to the top, while the bergamot cuts through with a sharper, more bitter edge that gives the opening its character. Cardamom threads a dry, papery warmth through both, binding the citrus into a cohesive first impression rather than letting them read as a scattered fruit basket. The result is a fragrance that opens with clarity and confidence, setting up the more complex middle and base that follow.
The composition reads as a polished, chypre-leaning fragrance that works across a range of wearing contexts. The Italian mandarin and cardamom top brings immediate brightness, while the aquatic and chypre heart notes introduce depth and a cooler mineral quality that keeps the scent from feeling overly sweet or simplistic. As the fragrance develops, the amber, patchouli, and musk base asserts itself, grounding the composition in a warm, slightly resinous finish. Geranium in the heart adds a sharp green edge that lifts the middle phase, preventing the chypre accord from settling into heaviness.
The evolution
The first 15 minutes belong to the citrus: Italian mandarin bright and almost sweet, bergamot cutting through with its bitter edge, cardamom adding a dry warmth underneath. This is a clean, polite opening, the kind that reads as fresh in a way that never feels obvious. By the 30-minute mark the chypre accord starts asserting itself. The aquatic notes bring a cool, slightly metallic quality, like the smell of tile after a hot shower, while geranium adds a sharp green note that pulls the composition somewhere more complex. The patchouli appears early here, adding depth before the base officially arrives. From hour two onward, the drydown takes over: Indonesian patchouli grounds everything, the amber softens the edges, and the musk smooths it out. The oud shows up as a background hum rather than a featured note, giving the base a woody resinous warmth without ever dominating. By hour five or six, what's left is mostly the musk-patchouli-amber skeleton, close to the skin, warm, slightly sweet, faintly mineral.
Cultural impact
Token Men arrives as a men's fragrance that takes a chypre direction, offering something distinctive within a category dominated by straightforward fresh or sporty scents. The composition leans into aquatic and mossy territory, bringing a cooler, more mineral character that sets it apart from brighter, fruit-forward men's offerings. The geranium heart adds a herbal sharpness that elevates the middle phase beyond generic freshness, while the patchouli and amber base grounds the scent in something warmer and more complex.
