The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Julien Rasquinet designed Valentino Noir Absolu Oud Essence in 2018 as part of the house's layering system, opulent oriental compositions meant to be worn alone or combined with lighter fragrances from the Valentino range. The brief was clear: intimacy and experimentation. Oud Essence became the anchor, built around the idea that oud shouldn't merely be present, it should structure the entire composition. Leather, cedar, and sandalwood were chosen not as supporting players but as a framework, holding the oud in place so it breathes rather than overwhelms. The result is a fragrance that earns its darkness.
The myrtle is the surprise. Camphor-like, herbal, almost medicinal, it cuts through the richness of the oud and leather, preventing the composition from settling into something syrupy. Instead, the heart reads as green, aromatic, almost Mediterranean against the darker oriental base. Saffron amplifies this effect, adding a warm spice that makes the myrtle feel alive rather than sharp. It's an unusual move for an oud fragrance: instead of building toward heaviness, the composition keeps lifting, keeping the dark notes in conversation with something brighter.
The evolution
The opening announces itself immediately. Saffron's metallic brightness hits first, followed by the deep resinous punch of oud, no apology, no easing in. Within minutes, leather emerges from the oud, adding a warm animalic depth that feels less like a note and more like a shift in atmosphere. The myrtle arrives around the 15-minute mark, introducing that herbal, camphor-like quality that prevents the composition from becoming dense. It doesn't soften the oud, it argues with it, creating a tension that keeps the heart lively. As the myrtle begins to fade after the first hour, sandalwood and cedar take over, settling the fragrance into a warm, creamy woody base that stays close to the skin for hours. The sillage shifts from strong to intimate around the two-hour mark, but the drydown on fabric can last well into the next day.
Cultural impact
Valentino Noir Absolu Oud Essence occupies a specific corner of the oud market, dark and resinous without the syrupy sweetness that often defines the category. It's the kind of fragrance that attracts strong opinions: wearers either find the myrtle note bracing or captivating, rarely indifferent. The winter-heavy seasonal distribution (93% in cold weather) reflects its character, this is a scent for the hour when the temperature drops and the room gets smaller. Strong sillage and longevity make it a statement piece rather than a daily driver, suited for someone who wears fragrance as a form of self-declaration.
