The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Megève takes its name from a village with a history rooted in mountain air and old stone. Vacanza, a fragrance house based in Amsterdam, turned to perfumer Frank Voelkl to translate that kind of altitude into something wearable. Released in 2025, Megève is their attempt to bottle a clear, still, quiet kind of cold, the kind that sits just above the clouds. The house treats each scent as a place you can carry, and this one smells like the walk from the lift to the lodge when your lungs remember what cold actually feels like. There's a transparency to the construction that feels intentional, a deliberate thinness that mirrors thin air. Even the opening reads cool before it reads anything else, the bergamot doing less of a sparkling citrus job and more of a quiet, mineral-edged lift.
What makes Megève interesting is the restraint of the construction. This is a green-fresh composition that earns its alpine brief through structure, not through obvious cooling notes. The violet leaf carries a cold, slightly metallic, green-cucumber quality that gives the composition its high-altitude character. Cardamom and nutmeg add a low warmth underneath, like body heat trapped inside a good coat. Haitian vetiver and Virginia cedar anchor the drydown with a dry, resinous woodiness that grounds the whole thing.
The evolution
The opening belongs to bergamot and cardamom, bright and lightly spiced, with violet leaf creeping in at the edges like a cold draft under a door. The mountain air accord lifts everything upward, giving the opening a quality that feels thin and high, almost mineral. The clary sage arrives with its herbaceous, slightly hay-like quality, and the pine settles in underneath with a clean, resinous greenness that reads more like forest floor than candy cane. Nutmeg warms the center without tipping it sweet. As the fragrance moves through its life on skin, the base takes over: Haitian vetiver brings a dry, earthy smokiness while Virginia cedar adds a pencil-shaving woodiness that stays clean rather than heavy. The green freshness doesn't disappear entirely; it just moves underneath, giving the woody drydown a quality that still feels alive and cool.
Cultural impact
Megève joins compositions like Kyoto, Cap Ferrat, and Portofino within Vacanza's lineup of place-driven scents. The brand operates in a space where fragrance is framed as travel, a way to carry a destination rather than just wear a scent. Megève fits that concept, offering a green-fresh composition built around violet leaf, sage, pine, and a quiet woody base of vetiver and cedar. Wearers describe it through its notes, picking up on the cucumber-like quality of the violet leaf, the dill-adjacent herbal character of the sage, and the grassy greenness that runs through the heart.
