Bee's Home

What makes Bee's Home structurally interesting is the restraint placed on its most dangerous note. Honey in fragrance tends to collapse into something tooth-achingly literal, or vanish without contributing anything to the architecture. Here, Carbonnel threads it between Bulgarian rose and Jasminum auriculatum in the heart, then anchors it with myrrh and amber underneath, so it reads as texture rather than sweetness on the skin.

The evolution

The first spray is a bright flicker, mandarin and frankincense catching each other before the rose arrives and pulls everything inward. Honey surfaces shortly after, and it does something unexpected: it doesn't announce itself. It melts. You notice it more on a jacket than on skin, where it warms into something golden and slightly waxy, like beeswax left in a sunlit window. The heart holds comfortably for an extended stretch, jasmine curling underneath the rose like a vine under a trellis, and the whole thing hums at moderate sillage without ever reaching further than an arm's length. Then the incense deepens. Myrrh and Ceylonese cinnamon arrive in the late stages of wear, not as a sharp spice but as warmth you feel more than smell, the kind of heat that registers in the chest before it registers in the nose.
